Battle for the Gold Pan

The Battle for the Gold Pan (also called CC/DU Rivalry, or just simply the Gold Pan) is series that is played between the Colorado College Tigers men's ice hockey team and the Denver Pioneers men's ice hockey team. The Gold Pan is widely considered to be one of the most intense rivalries in college hockey, equalling the intensity of the Beanpot rivalry in Boston, Massachusetts. The two teams played against one another the first year after the University of Denver created a men's hockey team, back in 1949. The two schools are charter members of the WCHA which was founded back in 1951. Colorado College is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado and has had its hockey program since 1938, while the University of Denver is located in Denver, Colorado, the two campuses are only 65 miles from each other. The home ice for the Colorado College Tigers is the World Arena (which is an Olympic size rink), while the home ice for the Denver Pioneers is Magness Arena (which is an NHL size rink).

The Gold Pan

Up until the 1990s, there was no formal series trophy for the season series, as the CC/DU games were merely for "bragging rights". In the early 1990s, then-DU coach Frank Serratorre and CC coach Don Lucia decided to create a travelling trophy for the season series winner between the schools. That first Gold Pan trophy featured an original rusty old gold pan from Cripple Creek, Colorado. That first trophy was lost after the 2003-2004 season, and the current (replacement) trophy was created in 2005.

Set up

Four games are played every regular season between Colorado College (CC) and the University of Denver (DU) two being away games and two being home games. The team with the better record out of the four games receives or is able to hold on to the Gold Pan for another year. If a season series is tied then the winner from last year keeps the gold pan for that year, draws are considered to be favorable to the previous winner. Post-season matches are not counted for the Gold Pan.
